AMARILLO, Texas — The Amarillo Police Department bomb squad was called to investigate a suspicious device at the scene where a railroad stowaway was arrested Wednesday night.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway’s police called APD to 1901 S. Johnson St. about 10:45 p.m. A sheriff’s office in another jurisdiction had notified the railroad that a man had been spotted hopping aboard a train after it had begun moving, APD Sgt. Randy TenBrink said.

Police arrested Edgar Tamayo, 24, whom they found wearing a black plastic bag as a raincoat, amid several shotgun shells and with a backpack nearby, TenBrink said.

The bomb squad was called to investigate a pipe wrapped in black electrical tape that was in the backpack, TenBrink said.

Tamayo is being held at Potter County Detention Center on charges of criminal trespass and for failure to give identification. Tamayo, who initially gave his name as Ivan Ibarra, also is wanted for robbery in California, TenBrink said.

Police released no further information about the suspicious device.
