POWNAL, Vt. — The Vermont State Police bomb squad helped a Pownal landowner dispose of the equivalent of six sticks of dynamite that were discovered inside an antique emergency kit once used by railroad employees.
Police say the explosives were labeled as “railroad torpedoes,” which were once used to signal upcoming danger.
But the torpedoes have not been used since the early 1970s and they are now considered obsolete.
Police say the landowner, whose name was not released, had 24 of the torpedoes, each of which is considered to be the equivalent of a quarter stick of dynamite.
The Vermont State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team made arrangements to take care of the explosives.
