MONTREAL — Transportation manufacturer Bombardier Transportation is securing a $229-million contract to supply 27 electric locomotives to New Jersey Transit Corp.
Bombardier’s specially designed multilevel commuter rail cars will help NJ Transit expand its passenger rail operations.
The new locomotives are based on ALP-46 electric technology that NJ Transit has used since 2002.
Bombardier said the new engines will feature technology upgrades, and will be capable of speeds up to 200 kilometers per hour.
The locomotives will be built at Bombardier’s factory in Kassel, Germany. Shipments are scheduled to begin in the fall of 2009.
The contract includes options for an additional 33 locomotives.
