MONTREAL — Bombardier Transportation has announced two orders worth about $161 million Cdn to supply an automatic train control system to the Madrid Metro.

The 104-million-euro contract announced Monday includes supply, installation and maintenance along two transit lines totalling 40 kilometres of track passing 54 stations. It also includes onboard equipment for the 117 trains that will operate on the lines.

The railway equipment division of the Montreal-based transportation equipment company (TSX:BBD.B) said the project is to be completed in 29 months.

Bombardier said the order is the first in Europe for its Cityflo 450 technology, an automatic radio-based train control system which does not need track circuits and can readily be upgraded to driverless operation.
