(Bombardier Transportation issued the following news release on December 27.)

BERLIN — Bombardier Transportation and its partner Alstom Transport LHB have won an order to supply Deutsche Bahn with suburban railway trains worth about $402 million US, with the Montreal-based transport firm’s share pegged at $262 million.

Deliveries under the contract for 78 ET 422 four-section trains, with an option for 72 more, are scheduled to take place between March 2008 and October 2010.

Bombardier will produce the electrical equipment for the train at its manufacturing site in Mannheim, while the bogies will be manufactured at Bombardier’s facility in Siegen.

The company’s Hennigsdorf site will carry out final assembly for 27 of the 78 trains.

Alstom, through its plant in Salzgitter, will supply 156 front bogies, 312 carbodies and final assembly for 51 trains.

The trains are for use on Deutsche Bahn’s suburban rail network of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The ET 422 series are a new generation of electric railcars with speeds up to 140 kilometres per hour, electrical swivelling-sliding doors, air conditioning units and modern acoustic and visual passenger information systems.
