ASTORIA, N.Y. — Amtrak officials said that a 16-year-old boy was in critical condition Saturday after being electrocuted while trespassing in a rail yard operated by the company.

The boy and two friends were allegedly attempting to jump over a wall to get into the substation near 49th Street when he struck a power line and was electrocuted, authorities said.

Amtrak said it was not clear what the boys were doing in the rail yard, but both the company and the New York City Police Department were investigating.

Police said the boy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was in critical condition Saturday.

Police said the boy’s two friends were charged with trespassing. The identities of the three boys were not released because they were all juveniles.
