LOS ANGELES — Two Union Pacific freight trains collided Monday in the railroad’s switching yard, sending a brakeman to the hospital for an ankle injury, a fire official said.

The low-speed collision occurred at 6:36 p.m. in an industrial area of El Sereno east of downtown, city fire spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

Witnesses said the brakeman jumped before the collision, injuring his ankle, Humphrey said.

The worker was taken to a local hospital. There was no immediate word on his condition.

Both engines were derailed during the collision, with one train hitting the side of the other, Union Pacific spokesman John Bromley said.

Both trains were hauling tank cars but none of the contents spilled.

The cause of the collision remained under investigation.
