LONDON — British construction group Balfour Beatty Plc on Wednesday said it had been awarded over $300 million of new rail engineering work in the United States, reports a wire service.

The largest of the new projects is for the design and build of the Greenbush Line Rail Corridor for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Rail Transit, a new 18-mile commuter line along Boston’s south shore. The project is to start shortly and is scheduled to be completed in mid-2005.

Balfour Beatty also said in a statement it had acquired from Knox Kershaw its specialist rail plant and services business for an initial consideration of $3.5 million, rising to a maximum of $6.2 million depending on performance.
