(Change to Win issued the following on November 7.)
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following is a statement from Anna Burger, chair of Change to Win on the results of the 2006 mid-term elections.
“Today, working people voted with a simple, common belief – if we take action and make our voices heard, we can help bring about change. What these election results show us is that while corporations may have spent millions, it’s working families who vote.
“For months, union volunteers devoted their time, energy, and hard-earned dollars to help elect leaders who will fight to make work pay for ordinary Americans, not just corporate America. And they helped give a raise to workers less fortunate who Congress, for too long, has ignored.
“This extraordinary effort has paid off, but our work is far from over.
“Activists from Change to Win are ready to welcome their new leadership, but with an expectation. These new leaders must do their part to restore the American Dream – a paycheck that supports a family, affordable health care, a secure retirement and most of all, a better life for our kids.”
About Change to Win
Change to Win was founded in September 2005 by seven unions and six million workers to build a movement of working people with the power to make work pay for everyone. We believe that all workers should have a paycheck that can support a family, affordable health care, a secure retirement and dignity on the job. The seven affiliated unions are: Service Employees International Union, UNITE HERE, United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Laborers’ International Union of North America, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and United Farm Workers of America.
