MONCTON, N.B. — A New Brunswick company has won a $12.6-million contract from the federal government and Via Rail to modernize railcars.

Industrial Rail Services of Moncton will upgrade six self-propelled diesel cars first built in the 1950s by the Budd company of Philadelphia.

The rebuilt cars will provide another 15 to 20 years of service to Via Rail for use on scenic routes in northern Ontario and Vancouver Island.

The first of them will be delivered to Via Rail in April of 2011.
About 40 skilled jobs will be supported by the contract.
