MONTREAL — The Canadian Industrial Relations Board rendered a highly awaited decision yesterday, regarding the United Transportation Union’s objections to the vote held with respect to the Canadian Council of Railway Operating Unions (CCROU).
The UTU disagreed with the Board’s powers and its interpretation of the vote, which lead to the transfer of 2,800 UTU members to the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference.
This vote was held between December 2003 and January 2004 to offer locomotive engineers and 2800 United Transportation Union members the choice between the UTU and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference.
The decision rendered by the CIRB makes it official that the 2800 United Transportation Union members in question as well as 1600 locomotive engineers are members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference. The Conference now represents a total of 7000 members.
To conclude, the TCRC is still awaiting the CIRB’s decision regarding the maintenance of way employees of the CN and CP and is confident that the decision will be rendered in favour of the Teamsters. With the maintenance of way employees, the TCRC will represent more than 12,000 members.
Teamsters Canada is a labour union with more than 110,000 members in Canada alone. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, to which we are affiliated, represents 1,500,000 members throughout North America. Visit our websites: www.teamsters-canada.org; teamstersrail.ca
