(The Associated Press circulated the following story on June 4.)
TICONDEROGA, N.Y. — Crews will need another two or three weeks to clean up the last of thousands of gallons of cooking oil that spilled into Lake Champlain when a train derailed.
The tanker carrying 23,000 gallons of canola oil was one of five cars on a Canadian Pacific Rail freight train that derailed along the lake shore in Ticonderoga on May 24.
Essex County officials said the oil isn’t considered harmful, although some did enter the nearby lake.
An environmental cleanup firm hired by CP Rail has removed the bulk of the liquid.
Montreal-to-New York City Amtrak trains were canceled for two days while the tracks were repaired and passengers had to be bused from Montreal to Albany around the closed portion of the tracks.
The cause of the derailment still hasn’t been determined.
