SARASOTA, Fla. — A driver smashed through lowered railroad crossing gates and her car was struck by a Metro Blue Line train. Injured were: two people in the car, the train engineer, and two train passengers, the Associated Press reported.

The car’s driver, Elena Taofi, 21, and passenger Lufi Sao, 21, both of Long Beach, had head trauma and were hospitalized in fair condition at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, police said. Sao also broke his pelvis.

The 6:30 a.m. crash occurred near Wardlow Road and Pacific Place.

Train engineer Rosie Haynes, 51, of Los Angeles, was treated for a shoulder injury. Two of the 50 train passengers were treated at the scene.
