CORFU, N.Y. — An investigation is continuing into how an empty mail car of an Amtrak passenger train derailed and caused minor damage to the tracks, a wire service reports.
Passengers heading from Buffalo to Rochester were held up for two hours Saturday after the derailment. There were no reported injuries.
The 24-car train, which was also carrying baggage and mail, was traveling east on CSX-owned tracks when a westbound train engineer noticed an empty mail car off the tracks, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department said.
The engineer notified the eastbound train, which stopped east of Corfu, 42 miles west of Rochester.
An investigation showed the derailed car was dragged for about a mile, police said.
