NORFOLK, Va. — The first passenger train to serve South Hampton Roads since 1977 pulled away from its platform at Harbor Park early this morning with an over-sized crowd on board for the inaugural trip.
The Amtrak train, scheduled to leave weekdays at 4:50 a.m., began rolling at 4:56 a.m. enroute to Richmond, Washington and points north. At 6:30 a.m. it was closing in on its first scheduled stop, at the Petersburg station in Ettrick.
