CHATHAM, NC — The vice president of the Pittsylvania Historical Society said he hopes the old Chatham Southern Railway Depot will open as a visitor’s center in September.
“This is a significant part of our past,” Glenn Giles said during an interview at the depot Monday. Giles is also the project manager for the station restoration project. The 1918-built depot was once the “social and economic center” of Chatham, Giles said.
Passengers used the depot at 340 Whitehead St. until 1965, when Southern Railway stopped passenger traffic. The depot took freight until it closed in 1975, Giles said.
