VULCAN, Alberta — CP Rail investigators were trying yesterday to determine what caused the derailment of a train carrying toxic anhydrous ammonia.
A total of 18 cars of a southbound CPR train left the tracks at about 11:10 a.m. about 10 km south of Vulcan. No one was injured.
The incident had the potential to be disastrous if any of the nine derailed cars had ruptured and leaked the toxic chemical into the air. A small amount of diesel fuel spilled from at least one of five fuel cars but was contained.
