SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Chinese-owned CRRC MA has been lauded for creating 158 jobs here as it builds Orange Line subway cars for the T and prepares to work on Red Line cars later this year. In Washington, where another CRRC division is among the bidders on a $500 million contract to build cars for the DC area, opponents say the rail giant is using Chinese government money to underbid competitors and stifle competition. Further, they argue, CRRC may even pose a security threat if the DC metro cars are used to monitor who goes where in the nation’s capital.
