Class Is as of mid-October employed 116,804 people, down 1.12% from mid-September’s level and down 13.21% from October’s 2019 count, according to Surface Transportation Board (STB) data. All six employment categories logged decreases last month compared with September. Those categories were: maintenance of equipment and stores, down 21.44% to 18,682 people; transportation (train and engine), down 15.56% to 46,749; transportation (other than train and engine), down 10.17% to 4,902; maintenance of way and structures, down 8.13% to 28,784; professional and administrative, down 5.84% to 10,359; and executives, officials and staff assistants, down 4.25% to 7,328. On a year-over-year basis, all categories reflected employment decreases including transportation (train and engine), which was down 0.61%.
