Class Is employed 117,582 workers in the United States as of mid-September, a 0.49% increase from August employment levels and a 2.95% increase year over year, according to Surface Transportation Board data. Five of six employment categories registered employment increases between August and September. They were: transportation (train and engine), up 0.85% to 49,173 employees; maintenance of equipment and stores, up 0.84% to 17,556; executives, officials and staff assistants, up 0.24% to 7,919; professional and administrative, up 0.19% to 9,810; and transportation (other than train and engine), up 0.04% to 4,718. Year over year, the number of transportation (train and engine) employees was up 4.79%.
