MOUNT VERNON SPRINGS, N.C. — Norfolk Southern employees have been working to remove coal from a small stream in southwest Chatham County since a train derailed there on September 10, the Charlotte News-Observer reported.
Fourteen cars filled with coal toppled about 5:30 a.m. today on the single track southwest of Mount Vernon Springs, said Susan Bland, a railway spokesperson. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The train — three locomotives and 85 cars — was on its way from Greensboro to Brickhaven to deliver coal to Carolina Power & Light, Bland said. No one was injured, but members of the railway’s safety and environmental team are working to clean coal from a stream near the derailment.
“We are hoping to have this track back in action sometime (Wednesday) morning,” Bland said.
