MONTREAL — Canadian National Railway Co. (TSX:CNR) and the Teamsters union have agreed to adjourn labour talks, with plans to startup again next month with the help of federal mediators.

In a joint release issued late Friday, CN and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference said they agreed to adjourn negotiations on Friday.

The two sides said they plan to resume talks with federal mediators during the week of Nov. 16.

“The company and union remain optimistic that they can negotiate a new collective agreement for 1,700 CN locomotive engineers in Canada without labour disruption,” the release stated.

The current agreement between the parties expired on Dec. 31, 2008.

CN’s railway spans Canada and mid-America.

The Teamsters union represents 125,000 members in Canada in all trades.
