HALIFAX — Canadian National Railway Co. will invest $24.2 million upgrading its main track between Halifax and Montreal, the company announced Thursday.

The company’s program will include $9.2 million to extend four sidings, while $15 million is being invested in tracks, bridges, signals and communications.

CN is also investing an additional $4.5 million in the reconstruction of the wharf area of the auto compound in Halifax.

The sidings, short areas of track connected to an adjacent line and used for storing and shunting trains, will be used by freight trains and VIA Rail Canada.

Improving facilities will make the Halifax port more competitive and help trains run on time, said a company news release.

“The on-time performance of VIA passenger trains running in the Halifax-Montreal corridor should improve thanks to this initiative,” said Keith Heller, CN’s senior vice-president for Eastern Canada.
