OTTAWA — Canadian National Railway Co., Canada’s biggest railway, said it was halting container shipments to Vancouver’s Deltaport shipping terminal because of a tugboat strike.

About 800 members of the Canadian Merchant Service Guild who operate tugboats and barges in British Columbia, walked off the job on Friday, disrupting shipments into and from Vancouver’s port.

Montreal-based Canadian National stopped accepting shipments Monday, spokesman Mark Hallman said in a telephone interview. He said he didn’t know how many shipments had been affected by the labor action.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation,” Hallman said. “Customers will have to hold shipments out of the terminals. At the moment, we are saying we can’t accept them.”
