CLEVELAND, November 15, 2001 — Two were dead and two were injured when freight trains collided Thursday. The accident occurred at about 6:15 a.m. about 25 miles northwest Detroit.

The two injured people were freed from the wreckage and airlifted to area hospitals. One victim was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. Both are reported to be in critical condition.

The derailment caused a fire and chemical leak and lead to some school closings, authorities said.

Authorities ordered an evacuation of people living within half a mile of the crash site because of the risk from chemicals on the trains.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
