TOPEKA, Kan. — A Union Pacific Railroad employee was killed in a collision Sunday afternoon just east of Abilene. According to the Capital-Journal, Elmer “Butch” Hulse, 59, died after the pickup truck he was driving collided with a southbound vehicle on Jeep Road. The truck Hulse was driving was fitted with wheels for railroad track, and the crossing gates did not close when he approached the grade crossing. Union Pacific described it as an unfortunate accident and did not know why the crossing arms malfunctioned.
