ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Three companies have sued CSX Transportation, saying its cleanup has proceeded too slowly after a freight train derailed and spilled hazardous chemicals two years ago.
In separate suits filed last week in U.S. District Court, Rochester Yacht Club, Pelican Marina and Waterfront Cafe, and Tapecon Inc. claimed CSX has been negligent in its efforts, including removal of contaminated soil.
CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle the rail company is cooperating with environmental officials, working to ensure that “anything that needs to get done is done, properly, appropriately, safely.”
On Dec. 23, 2001, several train cars jumped the rails and tankers containing methylene chloride and acetone leaked and caught fire.
