(Union Pacific issued the following on May 8.)

OMAHA, Neb. — Nonagreement and Train, Engine and Yard (TE&Y) employees should be aware of a recent personal information security incident at Union Pacific.

A Union Pacific employee’s personal computer was stolen Saturday, April 29, which contained a report with the names, Social Security numbers and birth dates of many nonagreement and TE&Y employees at Union Pacific. The file did not include any financial, medical, dependent or address information. The employee was authorized to have access to the information to do Union Pacific work, but did not follow UP security procedures.

The computer theft has been reported to the police, and the company is doing everything possible to determine whether the information has been used and to recover the computer. So far, it is believed the computer was stolen in a burglary that appeared to target other items. It does not appear that the computer or the data it contained was the primary objective of the thief.

Please accept Union Pacific’s sincere apology for this security incident. Letters are being mailed to the homes of those whose names are on the report contained in the stolen computer.

What Is Union Pacific Doing?
Union Pacific has purchased Equifax Credit Watch monitoring services for each employee who is identified on the report that was stored in the stolen computer. This service will be provided at no cost to employees for one year. It offers comprehensive credit file monitoring of Equifax, Experian and TransUnion credit reports, automatic notification of key changes to your credit files, unlimited credit reports, identity theft protection insurance with no deductible, and 24/7 live agent customer service to help you understand the content of your credit information. It also provides personalized theft victim assistance and initiates an investigation of inaccurate information.

To Enroll in the Service
Enrollment instructions for Equifax Credit Watch will be included in letters that are being mailed to employees whose names are on the report contained in the stolen computer. Affected employees must enroll with Equifax to use this service. Union Pacifc cannot enroll individuals.

What Else Can You Do?
Additionally, you may choose to adopt an increased level of protection by placing a “fraud alert” on your credit file. A fraud alert advises potential creditors that you may have been a potential victim of fraud and provides telephone contact information for the creditor to contact you.

The alert lasts for 90 days. There is no charge for this service.
