SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A transportation bill Congress approved Tuesday earmarks $45 million for Utah, including $17 million for ongoing construction of the light-rail line to the University of Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium and an extension to the school’s University Hospital, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.
Another $7 million in the appropriations bill will fund improvements to security and other operations at Salt Lake City International Airport. Utah Sen. Bob Bennett said upgrades are essential if the state is to successfully welcome the world to February’s 2002 Olympics.
Other Utah projects slated to receive funds:
- $1 million to construct a rail line from Salina to Union Pacific Railroad’s main line in Levan.
- $5 million for transportation during the Paralympic Games.
- $5 million to reimburse the Utah Department of Transportation for Interstate 15 reconstruction-related expenses.
- $3 million for intermodal transportation centers.
- $2 million for reconstruction of I-15 from the Sevier River to Mills Junction.
- $1 million to relocate Arches National Park’s main entrance.
- $2 million for Utah Transit Authority intermodal transportation centers.
- $2 million for additional work on 1-15 and state Route 153.
- $560,000 for UDOT’s “intelligent transportation system.”
- $500,000 for UTA and Park City buses.
- $250,000 to replace an access road at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge.
