CALGARY — Canadian Pacific Railway announced in a press release that 18 chemical shippers in Canada and the U.S. have been awarded the railway’s Chemical Shipper Safety Award for a flawless safety performance in 2001.
CPR’s Chemical Shipper Safety Award is presented to businesses that annually ship more than 500 freight carloads of regulated chemicals on CPR without a single accidental chemical release while loading or unloading the cars.
“All of our chemical shippers make safety their first priority. CPR’s Chemical Shipper Safety Awards are a way to recognize the most outstanding results of these efforts,” Ed Dodge, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of CPR, said.
“Nothing is judged a success on CPR unless it is done safely,” Mr. Dodge said. “This unconditional approach is shared by our chemical shippers and it is behind CPR’s performance as the safest major railway in North America for the last four years on the basis of train accidents.”
The Chemical Shipper Safety Awards complement CPR’s efforts as a partner in Responsible Care®, an initiative that unites CPR with its customers in continuously improving its environmental, health and safety performance. As a Responsible Care® partner, CPR has taken a leading role in preventing the release of chemicals during transit, and in working with communities to improve preparedness and response in the event of an accidental spill.
CPR introduced the Chemical Shipper Safety Award last year, recognizing the performance of shippers in 2000. Of the 18 winners for their performance last year, 11 are being given the award for the second time.
