CLEVELAND, November 29 — The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) Safety Task Force is helping to investigate a fatal head-on collision between two CSX freight trains this morning near Vitis, Fla.

One crew member was killed and three others were hospitalized following the accident, which took place about 25 miles northeast of Tampa at approximately 2 a.m.

According to BLET reports, the crash caused the derailment of about 14 cars and four engines. There were two-member crews on each train. The Associated Press reported that one train was headed south from Waycross, Ga., to Tampa, while the other, carrying rocks, was headed north from Miami to Wildwood.

The AP reported that the accident shut down about a mile stretch of roads from U.S. 98 to Otis Allen Road.
