GRAND BLANC, Mich. — Crews worked Monday to clean up after at least 26 cars being hauled by a CSX Transportation Inc. train derailed, spilling tons of gravel.
The train’s engineer and conductor weren’t hurt in the Sunday morning accident, The Flint Journal reported. The train was hauling 123 cars to Flint from Toledo.
The accident splintered wooden railroad ties and destroyed part of the track, the newspaper reported. It also created a plume of dust from the dumped gravel.
The cause of the derailment was under investigation, CSX spokesman Adam Hollingsworth said.
The cleanup, which includes removing the gravel and putting the cars back on the tracks, will likely continue through Tuesday, Hollingsworth said.
