JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In the aftermath of the devastating storms that ravaged the Southeast, CSX and its employees have been working feverishly on recovery efforts.
CSX’s first priority has been to account for employees and their families. While some employees have sustained serious or catastrophic damage to their homes or automobiles, the company is not aware of any serious personal injuries.
Southern Region employees, with support from colleagues around the network, have been clearing thousands of trees and debris from CSX lines and are gradually restoring service to customers. All of the main routes have been opened, and traffic has been rerouted in some areas. A number of facilities are still operating on generator power.
In the community, CSX is working on multiple fronts. Employees have learned that the most critical immediate needs are water and food for displaced residents. In response, CSX is sending trucks filled with drinking water to the hardest-hit communities. In addition, the company has sent 5,000 ready-to-eat meals and box lunches, with more on the way. For the communities most devastated by the storms, employees continue to work closely with the Red Cross, local emergency management and public officials to address additional needs.
As always, CSX employees are among the first to reach out to help in times of need. For example, in Cullman, Ala., several CSX employees have opened their church kitchen to provide meals for the community, including residents of a nearby assisted living facility.
