BRANT, N.Y. –According to the Associated Press, a railroad conductor was shot and wounded early Thursday after he got off a freight train to investigate a problem with the train, police said.
The CSX train made an emergency stop around 1 a.m. (0600 GMT) near the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation when the shooting occurred, said Erie County Deputy Sheriff Christopher Clark.
Conductor Kevin McCabe, 29, was shot around the left shoulder and his injuries weren’t considered life-threatening, officials said. McCabe, who has worked for CSX for three years, was transported to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, where he was in stable condition.
Police were still searching for the gunman. Erie County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Kenyon said police were looking for evidence and any witnesses who may have been in the area.
“There’s nothing to indicate that it’s anything more than an isolated incident,” Kenyon said.
The 51-car train was heading west from Buffalo to Willard, Ohio, CSX spokesman Robert Sullivan said. The train, hauling an assortment of materials, eventually went on to Ohio, he said.
Brant is 25 miles south of Buffalo.
