LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. — Two passing freight trains were involved in an early morning derailment Saturday that left 25 cars off the track and the rails closed for at least 24 hours, authorities said.
A single car began to derail as the trains passed Little Falls at 5:20 a.m., CSX spokesperson Misty Skipper said. As the car lost its grip on the track, it took other cars from its train off with it.
CSX was working Saturday morning to determine whether cars from the second train also left the tracks, she said.
A Little Falls Fire Department spokesman said that no physical injuries were reported from the accident.
A single tanker in one of the trains had residue from a chlorine-based material it had previously transported, but there was no immediate indication the car was leaking, Skipper said.
With the tracks closed, Amtrak was forced to cancel two trains that would have passed through Little Falls Saturday.
