CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The 8.39 acres Chillicothe is planning to purchase from CSX has met environmental standards for commercial and industrial use, the Chillicothe Gazette reported.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency issued a statement Wednesday that said the property located at East Seventh and South Watt streets was safe for use.

The city plans to build a transit garage on the site and move the salt pile there from Yoctangee Park. Chillicothe has been working with CSX for several years on the property with the Ohio EPA because of possible environmental hazards on old railroad land.

The Ohio EPA said measures will be taken to prevent soil from presenting a risk to construction workers or being wind blown.

City Council was scheduled to hear the second reading of an ordinance to purchase the land for $176,000.
