SEYMOUR, Ind. — A CSX Transportation locomotive being hauled through Seymour Wednesday morning appears to have lost one wheel off the tracks as it pulled through a spur connecting the CSX and Louisville and Indiana Railroad lines near downtown.

No one was injured, but the mishap damaged crossties as well as the crossing at Tipton Street.

It also caused a stir at Seymour Fire Department headquarters.

“It was pretty loud as it came by,” Firefighter Keith Campbell said. “It shook the whole station.”

Fire Chief Fred Hines and three other firefighters were in the kitchen talking and drinking coffee when the train rumbled to a halt.

“All of a sudden our chairs and table started shaking,” Hines said. “We looked outside and saw what looked like a dust storm.”

Crews reset the locomotive on the L&I tracks Wednesday afternoon.

The locomotive was apparently out of commission and being towed, Hines said. Darren Wagner of L&I’s marketing office in Louisville said that was his understanding as well but could not confirm it.

CSX crews at the site Wednesday afternoon would say only that the train was en route from Cincinnati to Louisville when the mishap occurred.

Lee Gordon, a special agent with CSX in Louisville, said he knew nothing of the incident and referred questions to the corporate office in Jacksonville, Fla. No one could be reached for comment.

Several rail crossings were blocked temporarily until the rest of the train was uncoupled.
