HAGERSTOWN, Md. — CSX Corp. will spend more than $28 million this year to maintain and improve its rail system in Maryland, the company said yesterday.
About a quarter of that amount is earmarked for the Baltimore-Washington corridor, where CSX plans to replace ties and rails, upgrade signals and add a third track in some places to increase capacity for trains, including Maryland Rail Commuter trains, CSX spokesman Robert T. Sullivan said.
“One of the things we’re always talking about is the need to ensure that as you handle commuter traffic, you’re not impairing your ability to move freight, because at that point you’re just driving things back onto the highway,” Sullivan said.
