(The Indianapolis Star published the following story on its website on September 17.)
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — CSX Transportation will conduct a half-day crackdown on railroad/highway intersections in Indianapolis today.
About a dozen intersections along the CSX lines that cut through the city will be the sites for stepped-up enforcement from 8 a.m. to noon. Indianapolis police and the Indiana State Police are working with CSX.
The intersections have a history of collisions, heavy train traffic and reports by train crews of motorists driving around crossing arms or rushing past oncoming trains. During the crackdown, police will be notified of an approaching train 15 to 20 minutes in advance, giving them time to stake out the intersection.
In 2002, CSX trains had 59 crashes at highway-rail intersections in Indiana, resulting in five deaths and 14 injuries. Eight crashes were in Indianapolis.
