NEW YORK — CSX Corp., the third-largest U.S. railroad, will open its computer system to New York and New Jersey counterterrorism agencies to help track hazardous cargo.
The accord will let police and security officials independently follow the location and contents of rail cars on CSX’s rail network in each state, the Jacksonville, Florida- based carrier said today in a statement. CSX said it hopes to make the partnership a model for use with other states.
Authorities’ access to the computer system will “jointly safeguard both the communities we serve and our ability to move the goods so critical to the economy,” CSX Chief Transportation Officer David Brown said in the statement.
Shares of CSX rose 53 cents to $49.28 at 11:11 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. They gained 42 percent this year before today.
