COVINGTON, Ky. — A train derailment closed down an intersection just outside Latonia for several hours Monday.
No one was injured as the train, hauling 50-foot sections of pipe, jumped the tracks at 34th Street and Decoursey Pike, just outside the Covington city limits around 1:30 p.m.
“There are no hazardous materials and no significant damage to the road,” said a Covington police spokesman, Lt. Col. Dave Finan.
The derailment, which occurred in the area near Banklick Creek, forced a temporary detour of about two or three blocks around the site.
Kim Skorniak, a spokesperson for CSX, said the train was headed to Cincinnati from Birmingham, Ala., when the fourth and fifth car of the 68-car train derailed. The affected cars were set back on the tracks around 6 p.m. and the road was reopened shortly thereafter, according to Skorniak.
The track was expected to be repaired in time for normal rail traffic to resume today.
No cause for the derailment was specified.
