NORTH VERSAILLES, Pa. — Seventeen cars on a freight train slipped off their tracks Wednesday, knocking over two locomotives on another track and injuring a conductor, authorities said.
The 92-car train, which was moving west from Cumberland, Md., to New Castle, Pa., derailed near North Versailles, southeast of Pittsburgh, around 11:30 a.m., said Dan Murphy, a spokesman for CSX Railroad. Several of the derailed cars knocked over two locomotives parked on a siding, one of which began leaking diesel fuel, Murphy said.
Hazardous material crews were called out to the remote area of Allegheny County but there were no immediate reports of danger, 911 supervisor Jim Edgar said.
CSX did not identify the conductor, who was taken to a hospital for a possible ankle injury.
The cause of the accident was under investigation.
