(The following report by Kara Rhodes appeared on the Erie Times-News website on November 7.)

ERIE, Pa. — A train derailed about 3 p.m. today near the intersection of East Sixth Street and the Bayfront Connector. It appears a CSX engine and one car shifted off the tracks.

The derailed cars are upright and not in traffic. But the mishap activated rail-crossing controls in the area, snarling traffic on the connector and East Sixth Street. Reports from the scene said CSX would need an hour to get to the scene.

Police were directing traffic around the rail crossing.

Fire crews are arriving at the scene.

The cause of the derailment is not yet known.
