BALTIMORE — A CSX train carrying a flammable substance derailed in East Baltimore yesterday, the third time in less than a month that a freight train derailed in the city.

About 10:30 a.m., three cars came off the rails near the 5100 block of Pulaski Highway, Baltimore Fire Department spokesman Capt. Roman Clark said.

Two of the cars contained ethanol, a highly flammable form of alcohol often used as a fuel additive, while the third car was empty, Clark said. No ethanol spilled.

On Friday, a tanker carrying motor oil derailed in Locust Point and flipped on its side, but did not spill its cargo. Late last month, city officials demanded more information about trains carrying hazardous materials in the city after a dozen cars of a CSX train derailed near M&T Bank Stadium.
