RICHMOND, Va. — CSX hopes to restore freight and passenger rail service through Southside Virginia by 9 p.m. Monday after a coal train derailed in Emporia early Monday morning.
The derailment occurred shortly after 3 a.m. and affected the last eight cars of a train, officials said.
An unknown amount of coal was spilled, said Garrick Francis, a spokesman for CSX. The cause hasn’t been determined.
The incident forced Amtrak to cancel a train bound from New York to Raleigh, N.C., said Cliff Cole, an Amtrak spokesman.
Passengers on two trains traveling between Rocky Mount, N.C., and Richmond were re-routed by bus.
