CLEVELAND, October 17 — The BLET’s District of Columbia State Legislative Board is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Locomotive Engineers Exposition at Union Station in Washington, D.C., on October 25.

The exposition will to create a forum for locomotive engineers and their labor partners to interact and obtain useful information from the BLET, Amtrak, Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration, and state agencies.

“Our goal is to enhance the professionalism and critical awareness of our members through information and education on industry trends, operating practices, safety, health, family welfare, and regulatory issues,” said Herbert Harris Jr., Chairman of the D.C. Legislative Board.

Members of the BLET’s two Washington D.C. Divisions — Division 482 and Division 14 — are cooperating with the D.C. Legislative Board in sponsoring the exhibition. In addition, members of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division of the Teamsters Rail Conference have been invited to participate.

“The current assault on Amtrak and rail labor requires that our local organizations coalesce to protect our members and families,” Brother Harris said. “The exposition is an opportunity to build stronger communications and broader work relationships.”

Last year, more than 200 locomotive engineers and union members participated in the 1st annual exposition.

“Locomotive engineers operating from throughout the Northeast Corridor benefited from the information and discussions,” Harris said. “This year, we are expecting larger attendance because of our expanded program and the involvement of the Teamster Rail Conference.”

The Washington D.C. State Legislative Board was formally established on July 12, 2005, making it the 38th BLET state legislative board. It is comprised primarily of passenger and commuter members.
