NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey Transit train service from Newark to New York’s Penn Station remained on hold late Saturday night as repair crews continued to work on a damaged overhead power wire.
The damaged line was discovered around 1 p.m. Saturday, and the resulting power problems caused numerous delays on both NJ Transit and Amtrak lines. However, it was not immediately known how extensive the damage was or what caused it.
NJ Transit tickets were being accepted by PATH, allowing travelers to switch at Newark Penn Station and take PATH trains into the city. Dan Stessel, an NJ Transit spokesman, said the agency expected to resume regular service sometime Sunday morning.
Amtrak trains were forced to take a detour around the damaged section on Saturday afternoon, but those trains were mostly back on schedule by Saturday night. However, the delays on both Amtrak and NJ Transit raised the possibility of complications for people arriving early at the Republican National Convention, which will start Monday in New York.
The damaged line, though, did not disrupt service along the Northeast Corridor line between Trenton and Newark Penn Station.
