CLEVELAND, May 10 — May 31 is the early registration deadline for members planning to attend the BLET’s 85th annual Southeastern Meeting Association convention. The convention is slated for June 24-29 at the Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Fla.

Arrangements Chairman Earl Karper is encouraging members to register as early as possible and to bring their families to the Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Fla.

“We are hard at work putting together an exciting, relaxing, and family-oriented fun-filled experience for you,” Brother Karper said. “For meeting attendees, there will be classes and workshops available to sharpen your skills and workplace knowledge, as well as the opportunity to make contacts and new friends with other railroaders from numerous railroads who are dealing with many of the same issues and problems. Plus, we are scheduling ample fun and family time, not just within the meeting week’s agenda, but also both before and after.”

Members can go to the SMA website to register online or to download a PDF registration form. The early registration fee is $119; and after May 31, the fee increases to $149 per person. Registration is available at:

The SMA Arrangements Committee has secured a discounted room rate of $141 per night (two queen beds or one king bed), which is good from June 19 through July 5 for those who wish to make an extended stay. The room rate of $141 represents a significant savings on rooms that would normally cost $195-$240 per night. You must mention “BLET/SMA” when making reservations in order to receive the discounted rate. You can make reservations by calling (407) 939-1020, or you can register online at:

Early registration is on June 24 with opening ceremonies the morning of June 25.

On June 26, the SMA will offer workshops for BLET Local Chairmen, Secretary-Treasurers and Legislative Representatives. There will also be a Mobilization workshop as well as a BLET Safety Task Force workshop.

Brother Karper and his Arrangements Committee have secured a rare opportunity for BLET members and their families: a “Behind the Magic” Walt Disney Steam Train tour on June 27, which is a private tour to see what goes on behind the scenes on Disney’s fully operating steam locomotives and trains. An additional tour will be held on June 29 if this event sells out.

Also on June 27, the SMA will host its annual golf tournament on an Arnold Palmer/Disney P.G.A.-rated course.

The annual SMA banquet is scheduled for the evening of June 28.

Your SMA registration will also afford you the opportunity to obtain discount admission tickets to all Disney Theme parks, water parks, and other attractions.
