NEW YORK — Grand Central Terminal’s thousands of visitors each day can’t see it or hear it, but deep beneath the bustling main concourse, a train center for the next century is slowly emerging from rock.

A tour of the massive East Side Access Project site Tuesday revealed why this monumental effort will cost at least $8 billion and take six more years.

Scores of workers since 2006 have been blasting stone, sculpting miles of tunnels and pushing engineering limits to expand Grand Central and make way for Long Island Rail Road trains.
