WILMINGTON, Del. — Delaware has purchased four commuter rail cars to replace obsolete cars on SEPTA’s R-2 line.

The Delaware Department of Transportation says the new cars have contoured seating, digital destination signs and doors in the middle of each car to improve the flow of passengers. They also regenerate energy each time the cars brake.

The four Silverliner V cars cost a total of $7.5 million.

The purchase is a first for Delaware, which has leased cars from SEPTA for many years. DelDOT spokesman Darrel Cole says the cars will save money in the long run by cutting maintenance costs.

The SEPTA R-2 line carried one million passengers between Delaware and Pennsylvania in the fiscal year that ended in June.
